AMY HADN’T BEEN on a double date in years. She barely had time for regular dates. Not that the sponsor party that evening could be considered a date, either double or otherwise. She just happened to be in attendance with Tobey, Tanya and Kent. Kent liked having her around in case any PR issues came up, and Tobey hadn’t wanted to be a third wheel at Kent and Tanya’s side, so her presence was required as part of her job.

None of which explained, of course, why she had spent almost twice as much time as usual doing her hair and makeup for this event and wondering if she’d brought the right dress to wear. She had finally made herself stop obsessing and had convinced herself that the simple but eye-catching red sheath was both flattering and appropriate. Red was one of Kent’s colors, and happened to look good on her. And if she hoped Tobey noticed…well, she was only human.

She’d been inordinately pleased when Tobey had taken one look at her and said simply, “Wow.”

Speaking of Tobey, she thought, glancing at him as he chatted with a Vittle Farms’ vice president, he looked pretty darned good himself. He wore a dark suit with a white shirt and a red-and-blue-patterned tie. He’d found time to have his hair trimmed and while she privately liked it shaggy and disheveled, she had to admit the tidy, professional look suited him, too.

Despite his expressed concerns about mingling in this social setting, he’d handled the first twenty minutes just fine. Of course, so far the conversation had all been pretty much about business, centering around the satisfactory qualifying run that afternoon, about the race tomorrow, about the points standing and some new rules NASCAR had recently implemented. He was comfortable enough talking about racing.

She could tell when he’d said all he could on that subject to the vice president. He started looking a little tense, as if searching his mind for some new topic. She moved to his side. “Tobey, there’s someone who would love to meet you. Do you mind if I steal him away, Carl?”

Having successfully extricated him, she towed him across the room.

“Thanks,” he stated. “I was out of small talk.”

“You’re doing fine.”

“Is there really someone who wants to meet me or was that a mercy rescue?”

“Both.” She paused in front of an older woman with dyed red hair and a too-young black dress. “Mrs. Kelley, I promised to introduce you to Kent’s new crew chief. This is Tobey Harris. Tobey, Mrs. Kelley’s father was one of the original partners in Vittle Farms.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, ma’am.”

“Well, look at you. Aren’t you handsome?” Mrs. Kelley, whom Amy estimated to be somewhere in her late seventies, took hold of Tobey’s arm and gazed up at him with a smile that was openly flirtatious. “How old are you, Tobey?”

It was to his credit that he kept smiling. “I’m twenty-eight.”

She nodded. “Plenty old enough to know what you’re doing, eh? And not just in the pits, isn’t that right?”

His lips twitched.
